SUP Malta
I found myself on the Mediterranean island of Malta in September 2016. I wasn’t really there for the purposes of stand-up paddling in Malta but rather to support the Scotland football team who were playing against the Maltese national team. But I could see the sea everywhere I went, and a quick Google search brought up a SUP hire shop in St George’s Bay. Happily, this was exactly where my hotel was. What a lovely coincidence.
Stand-up paddleboarding in Malta
On Saturday afternoon, I found myself shaking off a hangover, out in the bay, negotiating my way through the yachts, jet skis, and other watercraft. The St George’s Bay was fairly sheltered, but I could see huge waves rolling past in the open water as I approached the end of the bay. The man at the hire shop had warned me not to leave the bay. He needn’t have worried; I had no desire to be blown all the way to North Africa.
I returned the following day to recreate my adventure, but the shop wasn’t renting SUP boards as they thought it was too windy.
PS Scotland won 5-1 so it was a good trip all round!
