Eibsee (Stand-up Paddleboarding in Bavaria)
Eibsee
It was love at first sight! The very first time I saw a photograph of Eibsee online, I fell in love. I just knew that I had to paddle on this special body of water that lies in the shadow of the highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze. So when I arrived at Munich Airport one rainy Saturday in August 2021, I immediately undertook the two-hour drive to this lake in the Bavarian Alps.
The rain and overhanging cloud did not detract from the beauty of this place in any way. Rather, they seemed to enhance the experience. And I do not doubt that the inclement weather helped me to find a space in the car park!
Less than three kilometres in length, Eibsee certainly isn’t the largest lake in Germany, but I’m willing to wager it’s one of the prettiest. Not only due to the spectacular backdrop but also the crystal-clear alpine water. Water which takes on an almost otherworldly green-tinted hue as a result of mineral deposits.
I enjoyed a gentle ninety minutes paddling around the six-kilometre shoreline of the lake, stopping once to shelter from a heavy, but mercifully brief, shower of rain.

You won’t be surprised to learn that I also took a few photography breaks!
