Mexico
Cabo San Lucas
When you’re on a lifetime quest to stand-up paddleboard in every country in the world, this raises many questions:
‘What is a country?’ is perhaps the most obvious one.
And also: ‘What does it mean to stand-up paddle somewhere? Is there a minimum distance?’
The good thing about setting your own challenge is that you get to make your own rules. I had a decision to make in Mexico. While I was there with friends and family, we took a sailing trip out of Cabo San Lucas. The good news was that there was a stand-up paddleboard onboard the sailing boat. The bad news was that the two-piece paddle was faulty! The metal bolt which held the two sections in place was missing, so it was almost impossible to paddle. Every time I attempted to put the blade into the water, the top part of the shaft collapsed inside the bottom section.
But I did stand up, on a stand-up paddleboard, and I did, very briefly, paddle.
On balance, I have decided to place a tick against ‘Mexico’ on my spreadsheet, although I know I will surely return again someday for a longer and more satisfying SUP adventure in Mexico.
